Obituary

Mary Harriet Marshall Shelby Bell passed from this life Feb 7, 2017 at the age of 99. She was born Jan 8, 1918, in Coalville, Utah, the 6th child of Lorenzo Marshall and Mary Ann Fewkes. Her father was a coal miner in Coalville as were many other male family members. In August after her birth the family moved to Burley, Idaho, to help on her maternal grandparent's farm. In November, 1918, the Spanish flu took Mary's mother and grandmother from her. Members of Mary Ann's extended family helped take care of the children. One particular niece of her mother's seemed to have the most dedication to the children. In April, 1919, her father, Lorenzo, and Mary Ann's niece, Nettie Harris were married. Seven more siblings were born into the family. Mary loved being from such a large family. In March 1920, the family moved to Eagle Idaho where Mary was raised on Floating Feather at Park Lane. On July 3, 1936 she married Orris Shelby in Boise, Idaho, and moved to Rio Tinto Nevada for Orris to work in a copper mine. There was no housing the first winter and they lived in a hybrid wood/canvas structure. It reached -60 degrees that winter. Within a few years the mine shut down and they moved to a ranch at Riddle, Idaho, where Orris spent the time haying and Mary helped cook for the hay men. When the mine reopened they returned to Rio Tinto until 1944. They made many life-long friends while there. After most of them reached retirement age, they started having mine reunions every 2 years. Two children were born at Rio Tinto, Daryl Floyd and Shari Ann. They spent part of the next 13 years living in Boise, Idaho and Hagerman, Idaho, where they ran the Bar S Ranch. While living there, a daughter, Mary Renee was born. About 1954, they moved to and ran Ferncroft Lodge (no longer there) at mile marker 86 on the Payette River between Banks and Smiths Ferry. They ran it for several years before moving into Cascade. Mary worked at the Chief Cafe as a cook and enjoyed telling people she made 58 pies in one day. In 1957, they moved to Meridian, Idaho, to the home she lived in for the next 40 years. Orris passed away on a vacation in Hawaii February 27, 1984. August 17, 1996 she married William Edward (Ned) Bell at her home in Meridian. Mary had known him for over 50 years, since the Rio Tinto mine. Ned passed away in 2003. At age 95 her family decided she shouldn't live alone anymore and daughter Renee and husband Larry moved in with her for 2 years, then moved her into their home for 1 year. The last year, until her death she has lived with daughter Shari and husband Felix. Mary was preceded in death by her husbands Orris and Ned; her parents; her step mother Nettie Harris Marshall; sisters: Cleah Harris Cooper, Rulla Tilley, Genevieve Givens and Lorraine Ross; brothers: Norman Marshall, Carl Marshall, Owrel Marshall, Harold Marshall, Leo Marshall, Glen Marshall; her son Daryl Shelby and great- granddaughter Tisha Bivins.
